where is my water-horse ?

June 27, 2008

watching a little boy dip, swim and dive on the back of a water-horse in the waters of the scottish lochs strikes a chord deep within. how many times have i wished that i would find a magical creature, and raise it ? when you watch e.t., you barely wonder if its possible to harbor an alien in the house. you dismiss the possibility that such a creature may exist, and may actually give you magical powers.

that such a creature may be extremely untenable to take care of be hanged, just having one around reminds us of the many truly magical things we explain everyday. how often have we notices the flashing fireflies in the twilight, putting in specks of light that remind you of the set-up sebastian makes in the little mermaid. we keep moving, not noticing the final rays of the sun illuminating water in the distance.

suddenly its no longer about whether the magic truly exists, but about whether you want it to exist. we cannot wait for secrets to be revealed, we need to necessarily ensure that eyes can play tricks on us. will it take a monster rising out of the loch to make us realize the truth that stands in front of us all the time ?

the only way to make the world a better place for those who truly matter is to look at it as a kid. for the kid, the toys in his room can come alive at night, and a rat can make the worlds’ best chef. for the rest of us, its about the beauty of animation. maybe water-horses don’t exist, maybe cupboards don’t open out into new lands, maybe the ministry of magic doesn’t have an office anywhere at all, maybe people don’t get bitten by radioactive spiders, maybe a ring never had to be destroyed lest it take over the world. maybe.

but that doesn’t mean that they can’t exist. or that they won’t exist in the place they were always meant to be found.

in a child’s eyes.

Due to The Water Horse

There are not many fun travel deals to choose from. Although there are a few hotels offering special packages for children, many cheap flights don’t. The flights issue is quite severe. The car rental has no such problems though.

some of the things that have struck me recently. and none of them via the many blogs i read :P

a 20 year research experiment on evolution has yielded its first results. a lot of analysis remains, but some truly shattering ideas have been formed as a results.

an interesting analysis of the tata nano and its repurcussions for a growing india. [via shiladitya]

wired has a bunch of articles on a recent ruling in the 1st ever P2P distribution case to come to court wherein the judge decided that no actual true proof of distribution of copyrighted content is required to prove guilt. this plaintiff had the genuis idea of using a consistent online identity everywhere including on kazaa. there are counterarguments, but it is to be noted that the off-chance of unauthorized distribution and making whole-sale copies for unauthorized distribution are essentially the same ‘crime’ for the MPAA, and should be classified together. one of my favorite cases is the one where the RIAA downloaded illegal songs from a guy to prove intent of unauthorized distribution, and are now facing an appeal as this means they implicitly authorized the download :D

as a side note i wonder why wired has a poll on whether mccain should learn to use a computer ? i further wonder why such a guy is being encouraged to lead the US. then i realize that the US is always, always going to be the zenith for stupidity.

to round it up, a highly inventive video: [via digg]

just the other day

1993. i ran ahead, the glories of the day past aglow in my mind. one space mountain ride under my belt, at only age 10, was enough. i was tall enough. too bad for warsha. this was disneyworld, there were plenty of rides for her. that horse-ride for one. she was ecstatic. then mickey and minnie. and a glimpse of goofy. life could not be better.

**********

2008. i ambled forward, having skipped through most of the tarzan treehouse. somehow, underneath all the revived childhood, there was a slight lack of excitement i wanted to overcome. the indy ride had been fun, so had that “jungle cruise”. ‘pirates was probably going to be next, hopefully not too badly distorted by the movie. appa and amma were waiting patiently in the shade. i whipped out the map. where was ‘pirates’ again?

**********

the line was going to take some time. this was a mountain ride of some kind. looked interesting enough. warsha would probably be allowed on it. that was good. the time left when we entered was 40 minutes or somethhing. 10 were over. this should be fun. people were moving, appa pulled me forward. i wondered what we were going to do next.

**********

the pirates ride was not as bad as i thought it was going to be. i went over the rest of what we had. probably get tickets for that mountain ride. probably have lunch soon. got to find fries for mom. should make sure that we get out of this area in the next 40 minutes or so. and at some point ensure i go there.

**********

that ride was pretty neat. where would we go next. my eyes bulged at the sight. there was an island here. with a steamboat. the sign loomed above. ‘mom !’ impatience mounts. ‘moooooooooommm ! look, look, tom sawyer island ! in disneyworld !’

some things never change..

Age: 5. Parent-Teacher meeting.
“Satish is a good kid, his letters and numbers are coming along well. At this rate, he’ll be ahead pretty soon. Initially, he was facing some issues settling down, but he’s coming along well now. All he has to have is to be buckled down.”
[Dad/Mom]“Completely agree. We have seen the change.”

Age: 25. Parent-Advisor meeting.
“Satish is good, his research papers are coming along well. At this rate, he’ll be ahead pretty soon. Initially, he was facing some issues focusing, but he’s gained in intensity and research now. All he has to have is to be buckled down and pushed forward.”
[Dad/Mom]“Completely agree. We are still seeing the change.”

Me: whether age 5 or age 25, I stand in the background, shifting foot to foot, with a smile plastered on my face, and nodding along.

Sigh..

we’re back
